Fellini was in an existential crisis, a state of confusion. After working with a therapist a story emerged using his dreams and imagination, with time present, past and future. The working title of the film was The Beautiful Confusion. Eventually, it became 81/2 and is acclaimed as his masterpiece.
Over the last several years I envisioned a female director experiencing a similar crisis. A story arc emerged with a metaphoric perspective and no need for a precise identity. Observation, experimentation and motion were used for this woman’s search. Wide angle photography provided a cinematic atmosphere along with a black and white aesthetic. A measure of peace is found. Her journey continues, the metaphors abide and the stairs are climbed.
